Day 6 – Friday 5th
September – At Sea
A late start
this morning and looking forward to a less energetic day.
The morning
lecture by the former political editor for the BBC, Robin Oakley, ‘Between Cup
and Lip: the Influence of Alcohol on Politics’.
He told of the incidences where the effect of alcohol on many of our
well known politicians has turned into hilarious or otherwise serious
consequences.
There is
another choir practice at 12.00, we managed to complete the last of the songs we
are to perform, and the number of vocalists, are still increasing.
| Deck 9 Midships |
A wander
around the open decks in the afternoon and there are not so many on the
loungers or in the swimming pools, although it is very sunny, there is not much
warmth, not unless you can find a well sheltered spot.
I found this on the cabin balcony; happily
read more on St. Petersburg, its transport systems and how to follow the
instructions given by Nitish (wine waiter) to use the metro lines. These of course, did not go out to the island
but I had other options to choose from.
His wife had kindly written my Grandfather’s name in Russian which was
another helpful part of this jigsaw puzzle.
It is
another formal night and when all dressed, it is pleasure going into the
Princess lounge for pre-dinner drinks. Tonight,
it is time to try again the garlic snails which are an acquired taste and I
thoroughly enjoyed the flavours. This
was followed by another of my favourites, lobster and finished off with the
cheese board.
| Entrance Corridor to Club |
Into the
Commodore Club for the night caps, from the advantage point of being able to
look forward on this clear night, it was exciting seeing other ships gliding
along on the smooth, moonlit black sea.
Their navigational lights very pronounced against this backdrop, while
the ferries and other cruise ships were lit up like Christmas trees. For those on this sea, gazing at Queen
Victoria’s light show; must have been impressed by her sheer size and display.
Thoroughly
enjoyed this restful day and looking forward to our arrival in Russia.
